Most children will benefit from these initial interventions and no further assistance may be required. Examples of early and informal types of school-based interventions may include a change in seating arrangements (seating the child closer to the teacher); teaming the child with a student who has stronger academic performance; or including the child in small group instruction. In the initial stages, progress review meetings may be informal, such as a discussion between a teacher and guidance counselor.

Once a child has been referred for initial evaluation, under IDEA 2004, the school district has sixty days from the time of parent consent for evaluation (or as set out in state regulations) in which to complete the evaluation and convene an educational meeting to discuss the results of that evaluation.
