So culture resides in all learned behavior and in some shaping template or consciousness prior to behavior as well (that is, a "cultural template" can be in place prior to the birth of an individual person), (p. 1) Finally, Smith (2003) offered the following definition: "Culture is the combination of all the physical and behavioral aspects of a society. l). There are a number of common threads across these definitions. One is that a group's culture is one of the things that make it look and sound different from other groups.

AUTHOR'S REFLECTION I remember in my early childhood looking at pictures of people from other parts of the world in National Geographic and being so fascinated by how others lived. Since that time (which my preteen sons refer to as the Dark Ages) there has been an astounding broadening in the accessibility of images and contact with people from other cultures, partially as a result of the Internet and other forms of technology such as satellite communication. This increased breadth of available information has resulted in more awareness about the importance of valuing other cultures in addition to our own.

Many textbooks that discuss counseling with people of racial minorities provide descriptions of characteristics of that culture. Research on counseling particular racial groups often generates specific directives and reported client preferences for a particular counseling approach. This is referred to as a prescriptive approach to counseling minorities. There are two problems with the prescriptive approach. First, there are many large groups of people who are culturally different; the United States is indeed a melting pot.
