The Central Rand field, in which the gold-bearing strata were first discovered, and which is located about the city of Johannesburg, is now taken to be a geographic term used for the area of common overlap of the West Rand and East Rand goldfields. In addition to the six major goldfields, there are five smaller areas where limited amounts of gold have been won in the past.
